This late 19th-century hall lantern follows the Louis XVI Revival style, of English manufacture and dating from circa 1880-1900. The object is composed of a patinated silvered bronze frame holding cylindrical diamond-cut glass panels, complemented by a cut glass base secured by a pineapple finial. Classical architectural elements include fluted pilasters topped with acanthus leaf mounts and terminating in lion paw feet, alongside a ring hanger at the top. The top diameter measures 24 cm, the glass section to the top of the ring measures 60 cm, and the lantern length is 32 cm. It works well as an overhead lighting fixture in an entrance hall or corridor of a period home.

Lanterns produced between 1880 and 1900 often combine Classical Revival or Louis XVI style elements with heavy lead cut glass. Silvered bronze frames were electroplated to provide a bright finish that complemented the refractive quality of diamond-cut crystal glass.

High-grade period lanterns were constructed using cast bronze or brass, frequently plated with silver or gilded (ormolu). The glass bodies were hand-blown and diamond-cut by glassmakers to maximise light refraction from flame or early electric sources.

Authentic period pieces display hand-chased bronze mounts, natural patina or tarnish in crevice areas, and crisp hand-cut facets on the glass. Hand-cut glass will feature subtle imperfections and sharp edges, unlike modern machine-moulded glass.

Place the lantern as a focal point in a formal entryway, hallway, or stairwell landing to create a dramatic light diffusion. Combining historical metalwork with neutral contemporary backdrops highlights the intricate detail of the frame.

Dust the metal and glass regularly with a soft, lint-free cloth. Avoid abrasive chemical cleaners on silvered bronze to preserve the remaining plating, and use a mild dish soap solution applied with a damp cloth for cleaning the cut glass detail.
