Magnificent Gilded Bronze Table Lamp, After a Design of Juste-aurèle Meissonier (1695-1750)

1900 - 1920
Description

Magnificent Gilded Bronze Table Lamp, After A Design of Juste-Aurèle Meissonier (1695-1750)

With magnificent high quality original gilded base.

All over in original condition no repairs or missing parts, the original shade only with new ivory coloured fabric, but still with the original velvet green lining.

The lamp has been rewired with old style fabric cable.

65cm high, 32cm high ( base only) shade 42cm diameter.

Juste-Aurèle Meissonier (1695 – 31 July 1750) was a French goldsmith, sculptor, painter, architect, and furniture designer.

He was born in Turin, Savoyard state, but became known as a worker in Paris, where he died. His Italian origin and training were probably responsible for the extravagance of his decorative style. He shared, and perhaps distanced, the meretricious triumphs of Oppenord and Germain, since he dealt with the Rococo in its most daring and flamboyant developments.

French, circa 1900-20

This table lamp originates from around 1900 in the French Rococo style, following a design by Juste-Aurèle Meissonier. The piece is constructed from gilded bronze with a warm gold finish, featuring an asymmetrical scrolling base and a decorative finial top. The fitted fabric shade is covered in ivory-coloured fabric and detailed with dark green vertical velvet piping. The lamp stands 65 cm high, 42 cm wide, and 42 cm deep. In a contemporary interior, this lamp provides accent lighting when placed on a sideboard top, desk, or side table in a living room, hallway, or study. The electrical setup includes an old-style fabric cable.

Rococo style lighting features elaborate, asymmetrical ornamentation, including scrolling rocaille foliage, shells, and flowing curves. Originating in 18th-century France under Louis XV, design masters like Juste-Aurele Meissonier defined this movement through dynamic, organic forms executed in cast gilt bronze.

Gilt bronze, or ormolu, objects were created using the lost-wax casting technique, followed by detailed hand-chasing to refine surface textures. Fire-gilding was historically applied by fusing a gold amalgam onto bronze, producing a durable, highly reflective gold finish.

Authentic pieces feature sharp, hand-chased metal details, casting seam irregularities beneath, and substantial visual weight relative to modern reproductions. Look for natural oxidation in recessed areas and signs of conversion or drilled wiring holes on earlier candlestick bases.

Place a Rococo gilded bronze lamp on a dark wood console table, marble mantelpiece, or tailored desk to create contrast. Pair it with clean-lined art or neutral textiles to highlight the intricate metallic craftsmanship without overwhelming the space.

Dust gilt bronze regularly using a soft, dry microfibre cloth or natural bristle brush. Avoid chemical cleaners, metal polishes, or water, as abrasive agents can wear down the delicate surface layer of gold gilding.
