Antique Jacobean Style Oak Bureau Bookcase | Barley Twist Legs

1900 - 1920
For Sale by ActFurniture LTD
Description

Antique early 20th century Jacobean style bureau bookcase in oak, a handsome and well-proportioned piece of good quality, showcasing fine craftsmanship and combining a writing desk and bookcase in one.

The upper section has a pair of astragal glazed doors opening to adjustable shelves, beneath a moulded cornice and a carved scrolling frieze with a central geometric boss. The fall front opens to a fitted interior of pigeonholes and a small central drawer, with a writing surface supported on brass stays.

Below are two short drawers either side of a carved central panel, over a long drawer, all with geometric moulded fronts and brass flowerhead drop handles. The base stands on barley twist front legs joined by stretchers.

The oak displays a stunning figured grain with striking medullary rays and a warm, rich colour throughout.

The bookcase comes apart in two sections for easier delivery and access. Presented in good condition commensurate with age. A very desirable bureau bookcase, a perfect addition to any study, hallway or living room.

This early 20th century bureau bookcase in the Jacobean style comes in a rich, dark brown oak timber with visible medullary rays. The tall combination furniture piece stands at 202 cm high, 91.5 cm wide, and 43 cm deep, separating into two modular sections for transport. The upper cabinet features a moulded cornice, a carved scrolling frieze with a central geometric boss, and a pair of glazed doors divided into multi-pane sections. Below sits a fall-front writing flap with geometric moulded panels, dropping to reveal an internal arrangement of pigeonholes and a small central drawer. The lower section incorporates two small upper drawers flanking a carved central panel, positioned above two wider lower drawers, all fitted with small brass drop handles. The entire carcass rests on sturdy, turned barley twist legs connected by low stretcher rails at the base. In a modern home, this practical hybrid item functions effectively in a study, library, hallway, or living room to store books and provide a dedicated writing station.

A Jacobean style bureau bookcase is a vertical storage unit combining an upper glazed display cabinet with a lower sloping fall-front writing desk and storage drawers. The style reflects seventeenth-century English design elements, such as dark oak timber, geometric mouldings, and turned legs.

These pieces are constructed from solid oak timber and oak veneers, featuring glass panes set into framed door apertures. Drawer construction often incorporates dovetail joinery, accompanied by drop handles cast from brass or iron alloys.

Authentic revival pieces feature traditional joinery, such as hand-cut dovetail joints on drawer linings, hand-turned barley twist leg supports, and heavy oak framing. Grain patterns and natural surface oxidisation on the timber also indicate age and period construction.

Place the unit against a neutral wall in a study, reception room, or hallway to create a functional writing area and visual focal point. Display ceramics or structured book collections within the glazed section to balance the weight of the dark timber cabinet.

Clean timber surfaces by dusting regularly with a lint-free cloth and apply beeswax polish twice yearly to protect the finish. Use a targeted glass cleaner applied directly to a cloth to clean glazed panels without wetting adjacent wood mouldings.
