This vintage mid-century British letter opener is made of sterling silver with a stainless steel folding penknife blade. The silver piece has a silver colour, a tapered paper blade, and an engine-turned handle casing with hallmark stamps, two pivot pins, and a blank cartouche. Measuring 23.5 cm in length and 1.7 cm in width, it is a gentleman's library desk accessory. The letter opener sits on an office desk to open correspondence. Harrison Fisher & Co made the piece for Dunhill in 1949, and it bears full hallmarks alongside the engraved Dunhill London mark. The item displays light signs of use in keeping with its age, including a few light marks.

Letter openers and paper knives became essential desk implements during the nineteenth and twentieth centuries for unsealing correspondence and opening uncut book pages. Silver versions frequently incorporated additional utilitarian implements, such as folding penknife blades, reflecting compact mid-century personal accessorising.

These implements are constructed with sterling silver handles or casings, often finished with engine-turned geometric patterns. The main paper blade may be silver or silver-plated, while internal folding mechanisms utilize steel components for structural rigidity.

Authentic British silver items feature official assay office hallmarks stamped directly into the metal, indicating the silver purity mark, makers initials, assay town symbol, and date letter. Precise engine-turned patterns and clear stamped markings are key indicators of original manufacture.

Place the item on a desk blotter, leather tray, or writing slope alongside stationery accessories to complement an office setup. It also functions as a decorative styling object displayed on a bookshelf or library side table.

Remove tarnish using a soft microfibre cloth and a specialised silver polishing cream, taking care not to rub aggressively over stamped hallmarks. Store the item in a dry climate to prevent accelerated oxidisation.
