A pot-pourri box is a small decorative vessel featuring a pierced or lattice-work lid, designed to allow fragrance from dried flowers and spices to escape into the surrounding room. Popular during the nineteenth and early twentieth centuries, these containers were placed on vanity tables, desks, and sideboards as functional accent pieces.

Edwardian pieces were typically constructed from sterling silver, often hallmarked in British assay offices such as Birmingham or London. Lids and covers frequently incorporated shell, mother-of-pearl, tortoiseshell, or enamel, set within intricate fretwork or scrollwork borders.

Authentic British pieces bear official hallmarks including the makers mark, town mark, standard mark (such as the lion passant for sterling silver), and a date letter corresponding to the Edwardian period (19011910). Hand-cut scrollwork and genuine natural materials like carved mother-of-pearl also distinguish period items from modern reproductions.

A silver pot-pourri box functions effectively on a bedside table, dressing tray, or bathroom vanity. It can be paired with small glass bottles or books to add texture and metallic contrast to modern, neutral surfaces.

Silver components should be cleaned gently using a soft, non-abrasive silver polishing cloth, avoiding liquid dips that could damage organic materials. Mother-of-pearl insets should be wiped clean with a dry, soft microfibre cloth and kept away from direct heat, excess moisture, and chemical cleansers.
