Description

Elegant 19th century Italian Marquetry Bureau Desk

A charming and finely crafted Italian cylinder bureau dating from the late 19th century, displaying the distinctive design influences of the Veneto and Lombardy regions. The bombe-shaped front, graceful cylinder top, pronounced cabriole legs, and beautifully serpentine apron are all hallmarks of the highly fashionable Italian revival style of the period.

The bureau is richly adorned with delicate floral marquetry, featuring draped garlands, scrolling foliage, and an attractive central ribbon and trophy motif. The contrasting woods and intricate inlay work create a wonderfully decorative appearance, highlighting the craftsmanship associated with Northern Italian cabinetmaking.

Opening the fall-front reveals a practical fitted interior complete with a sliding writing drawer, making the piece as functional as it is elegant. Compact in scale yet highly decorative, this bureau would make an ideal writing desk, occasional piece, or statement addition to a traditional or eclectic interior.

A particularly attractive and well-proportioned example of Italian revival furniture, combining graceful form, fine marquetry decoration, and useful functionality.

This nineteenth-century Italian bureau desk is fashioned in the Rococo Revival style from warm brown walnut and fruitwood marquetry. The sloping fall-front lid, curved side panels, and serpentine drawers are decorated with intricate floral inlay, scrolling foliage, and a central ribbon and trophy motif, set against contrasting pale and dark timber tones. Slender cabriole legs support the bombe body, terminating in subtle scroll feet beneath a shaped apron. Measuring 87 cm high by 60 cm wide and 40 cm deep, the compact bureau fits comfortably into a study, bedroom, or living room as a functional writing desk or decorative occasional piece. The drop-front opens to reveal a fitted interior with a sliding writing surface, providing practical workspace for correspondence while maintaining a refined profile suited to traditional or eclectic interiors.

An Italian marquetry bureau desk is a compact writing cabinet featuring decorative wood inlay patterns, a sloping fall-front writing surface, and slender legs, popularised during the 18th and 19th centuries in Italy.

These pieces feature solid timber carcasses, often walnut or pine, overlaid with fine veneers of contrasting hardwoods and fruitwoods. The marquetry is crafted by cutting thin veneer pieces to form intricate patterns, secured with traditional animal hide glue.

Authentic 19th-century examples display hand-cut joinery, variable veneer thickness, natural timber shrinkage lines, and aged brass fittings. The unvarnished underside and drawer interiors usually show distinct hand-planing marks.

Position the bureau in an entryway, alcove, or bedroom nook as a focal point, pairing it with contemporary artwork above or a simple desk lamp to balance historical craftsmanship with modern aesthetics.

Keep the piece away from direct sunlight and heat radiators to prevent veneer movement and lifting. Dust regularly using a soft, dry microfibre cloth and nourish the timber annually with high-grade beeswax polish.
