This French School sculpture from 1930 is executed in dark brown bronze with fine detail, depicting a polo player wearing a helmet on a bucking horse caught in a dynamic athletic pose. The full action piece stands on an oval cast base featuring a grassy field set over a marble base, conveying movement through the rearing posture of the pony and the outstretched arm of the rider. The sculpture measures 56 cm high, 56 cm wide, and 28 cm deep. Placed within a gentleman's library or study, this piece serves as a striking decorative sculpture on an office desk. The dark bronze patination and sculptural modelling offer a classic equestrian motif suited for traditional interior schemes.

FAQs

French equestrian bronzes originated predominantly in the nineteenth century, characterised by detailed cast bronze depictions of horses and riders capturing dynamic movement, anatomical accuracy, and athletic drama.

These sculptures are typically created using the lost-wax or sand-casting method, after which the metal surface is hand-chased and finished with a chemically applied patina to achieve depth of colour.

Authentic period bronzes feature hand-chased surface details, natural wear on high points, crisp foundry marks or signatures, and a genuine patinated finish rather than cold painted coatings.

A bronze equestrian figure functions well on a mahogany desk, a library bookshelf, or a mantlepiece, where its rich patina contrasts against neutral panelling or dark woodwork.

Dust the surface regularly with a soft dry cloth or soft-bristled brush, and apply a light coat of clear microcrystalline wax annually to protect the surface from oxidation and atmospheric moisture.
