This late nineteenth-century French bronze sculpture portrays a youthful Henry IV of France standing upright beside a tree stump upon a square plinth base. Modelled after Francois J Bosio and produced by the Parisian foundry F. Barbedienne, the piece bears the foundry signature and the Collas reduction stamp. The figure wears traditional period attire including a chased doublet with long sleeves, fitted breeches, and a ruffled collar around the neck, while holding a sword hilt in the left hand. The dark brown patinated bronze exhibits smooth polished surfaces along the arms and legs contrasting with textured pleats in the clothing. Measuring 49.5 cm high, 18 cm wide, and 23.5 cm deep, this sculpture stands as an ornamental display item. Suitable for placement upon a mantelpiece or within a gentleman's library, the sculpture integrates directly into traditional or classic interior settings. The solid rectangular base allows secure positioning on flat surfaces without requiring additional support or mounting hardware. The dark bronze colour coordinates easily with wooden furniture, leather upholstery, and scholarly desk accessories. This piece requires no complex installation and brings historical character to studies, living rooms, or entrance halls.

During the nineteenth century, French foundries specialized in producing high-quality bronze reductions of famous classical, historical, and contemporary monuments. Foundries such as Barbedienne employed advanced mechanical reduction techniques to produce detailed decorative figures for private collectors and grand interiors.

These sculptures were created using sand casting or lost-wax casting methods. Craftsmen applied intricate hand-chasing to refine surface details before applying chemical patination to achieve deep brown or dark copper tones across the metal surface.

Authentic period bronzes feature distinct foundry stamps or signatures cast or cold-stamped directly into the metal, crisp hand-chased detailing along clothing and hair, and realistic weight. The patination should exhibit subtle variations consistent with age rather than uniform paint.

A dark bronze sculpture provides a strong visual focal point when positioned on a mantelpiece, sideboard, or desk against neutral walls. Grouping the figure with natural timber, stone, or leather items enhances its rich dark tones and tactile texture.

Dust the surface regularly using a soft, dry brush or lint-free cloth. Avoid chemical cleaning agents or abrasive polishes, as these strip the original patina; application of microcrystalline wax once a year protects the metal against oxidisation.
