An excellent early 20th Century Japanese Animalier bronze study of a bridled horse standing alert. The bronze exhibits very fine hand chased surface detail and wonderful rich brown patina, raised on a naturalistic base, signed.

ABOUT

Itô Kunio (????, 1890–1970) was a Japanese sculptor born in Iwate Prefecture, renowned for his bronze horse sculptures. He devoted much of his work to capturing equine movement and anatomy with realism and dynamism.

Among his notable works is Rush of a Gun Carriage (1940), a dramatic bronze piece depicting horses pulling a gun carriage — now held by The National Museum of Modern Art, Tokyo.

He exhibited regularly at major national art exhibitions, developing a reputation for finely detailed, lifelike bronze animals.
