Robert Belcher Antiques has dated this Antique Bronze Fox Sculpture to the 1870s.
The animal is rendered with considerable naturalism and sensitivity to form, the carefully worked surface capturing the texture of the fur, while the alert expression and poised stance convey the characteristic wariness and quiet intensity of this agile predator.

The quality of the modelling demonstrates Mêne’s accomplished understanding of animal anatomy and movement. Particular attention has been paid to the subtle articulation of the head and body, resulting in a compact yet highly expressive composition that conveys both the physical character and instinctive behaviour of the animal.

The fox is mounted on a naturalistically textured rectangular bronze base with rounded corners. The base is signed by the sculptor at the front right-hand corner. The underside is lined with baize to protect the supporting surface and preserve the polished finish.

A charming and finely executed example of nineteenth-century French animalier sculpture, this small bronze displays the observational skill and technical refinement for which Mêne is so highly regarded. Its modest scale and strong naturalistic character make it an appealing addition to a collection of French bronzes or Victorian and nineteenth-century decorative sculpture.
