This grand tour bronze sculpture from 1880 depicts the mythological figure Silenus standing on a circular relief base while supporting a raised dish above his head. The dark brown patinated bronze figure wears classical drapery and wrestles a serpent that holds aloft an associated cast and chased bowl based on classical designs. Visible details include a bearded countenance, vine leaf hair ornaments, detailed musculature, and elaborate floral and scroll relief moulding along the circumference of the circular base and the exterior of the upper dish. The piece measures 61 cm high, 26 cm wide, and 26 cm deep. Positioned on a mantelpiece or within a gentleman's library, this decorative sculpture brings classical Italian artistry into a home interior. The work serves as a striking display object for collector shelves or tables, functioning as a focal point in period-inspired rooms. The heavy dark patination and intricate figural modelling suit traditional or eclectic interior schemes where classical motifs and sculptural objects are desired.

Grand Tour bronzes are reduced-scale bronze reproductions of famous ancient Greek, Roman, and Renaissance sculptures. Produced predominantly in Italy during the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries, they were purchased by wealthy European travellers as souvenirs during their educational Grand Tour across the continent.

These bronzes were typically manufactured using the lost-wax casting technique (cire perdue) or sand casting. Founders cast the components in sections, followed by hand-chasing to refine surface details before applying a chemical patina to simulate aged metal or classical antiquities.

Authentic nineteenth-century pieces display evidence of hand-chasing, crisp anatomical details, appropriate historical wear on contact points, and traditional dark or dark-green patination. Look for foundry marks, fine join lines, or threaded rod attachments beneath the circular base consistent with historic metalworking techniques.

Place the sculpture against a neutral backdrop on a mantelpiece, sideboard, or within a curated bookcase alongside books and architectural elements. Combining classical metalwork with clean contemporary lines creates visual contrast and anchors traditional vignettes.

Dust regularly using a soft, dry microfibre cloth or a soft-bristled brush to clean intricate carved areas. Avoid abrasive chemical polish or water, as these can strip original patination; a light application of microcrystalline wax can be applied periodically to protect the metal finish.
