Marly Horse And Groom Charles Crozatier

This is a fine Victorian signed bronze Marly Horse. The work depicts a rearing horse being restrained by a semi-clad attendant.
 
The originals are now housed in the Louvre Museum in Paris, with replicas standing in the Place de la Concorde.
 
Crozatier was born to poor parents, his family settled in Aiguilhe where he was raised from 1795 to 1813.
 
He entered the Ecole des Beaux-Arts in Paris in the studio of Pierre Cartellier. He stayed in Italy from where he brought back a quantity of casts after the great masters of sculpture of the Renaissance and Baroque art which he would use to compose bronze art objects.
 
This production attracted important princely, royal and imperial commissions, in France and abroad.
 
He died on February 8, 1855, leaving a large part of his assets to his hometown of Puy-en-Velav.
 
Or the 340,000 francs bequeathed, 100,000 francs were allocated to the construction of a new Museum; a sum to which his widow added 26,000 francs.
