Antique Italian Bronze Horse Sculpture Signed Luigi Secchi & Muñoz 38cm 7kg

19th century
Description

Antique Italian bronze sculpture depicts a standing stallion with a naturalistic, athletic build and highly defined musculature. The horse is captured in a formal standing position on an integral, rectangular bronze base with a textured, earth-like surface. The piece features two distinct hand-engraved signatures on the vertical face of the base: "Secchi sculptr" on the front and "Muñoz sculptr" on the side. The figure is rendered with fine anatomical detail, including a slightly arched neck, a textured mane, and a long tail with visible hair strands.

The sculpture is finished in a dark brown, multi-tonal patina that shows variations in color and sheen across the body. Its physical dimensions are approximately 38 centimeters in length and 11 centimeters in width, with a total weight of 7 kilograms

Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

The Animalier movement emerged in nineteenth-century Europe, focusing on accurate, realistic depictions of animals in bronze. Sculptors studied anatomy closely to capture naturalistic proportions, musculature, and movement.

Most nineteenth- and early twentieth-century bronze sculptures were produced using the lost-wax (cire perdue) or sand casting methods. Once cast, the raw bronze was finished by hand chiselling and treated with chemicals to create a controlled patination.

Authentic pieces exhibit refined hand-chased detailing, crisp signatures or foundry marks, and natural patination showing wear in handling areas. They generally feature substantial weight and precise anatomical modelling.

Place the sculpture as a focal point on a mantelpiece, sideboard, or within a curated bookshelf alongside leather-bound books and understated modern ceramics to create visual depth and narrative contrast.

Dust regularly with a soft, dry microfibre cloth to prevent dirt build-up. Avoid chemical solvents and water; apply a thin coat of clear microcrystalline wax annually to protect the surface patination from oxidation.
