This pair of French Baroque Revival sculptures follows the renowned models of the Marly horses after Coustou, originating from the late 19th century around 1890. Each piece is cast in bronze with a dark patina and a deep dark brown colour, depicting a dynamic rearing horse paired with a muscular male groom in drapery holding the reins. The detailed figures stand upon naturalistic bases with sculpted foliage and ground texture, showcasing flowing manes and tails. The signature of Coustou appears on the base of each sculpture. Measuring 38 cm high, 33 cm wide and 14 cm deep, these substantial decorative objects fit ideally upon a sideboard top within a traditional French chateau interior setting. They add a classical sculptural accent to a room, suitable for display in a living room, study or hallway. The dark metal finish complements timber furniture and classic architectural mouldings found in heritage properties.

The original Marly Horses were commissioned in 1739 by King Louis XV of France, sculpted by Guillaume Coustou for the Chateau de Marly, and subsequently replicated in various bronze sizes during the 19th century.

These figures were typically cast using the lost-wax (cire perdue) process or sand casting techniques, followed by hand-chasing to refine details and the application of a patinated chemical finish.

Authentic period castings feature crisp detail in the mane and groom figures, a hand-applied patina, substantial weight, and often carry the signature Coustou cast into the base.

Position a pair symmetrically on a fireplace mantelpiece, sideboard top, or console table to establish structure and visual balance within a contemporary or traditional scheme.

Dust regularly with a dry microfibre cloth and apply a thin coat of clear microcrystalline wax annually, buffing gently to protect the patina without using harsh chemical polishers.
