This Regency period child's tankard originates from the 19th century and dates to c1820. Formed of Old Sheffield plate, it exhibits a silver exterior and a gold gilt interior, complemented by a smooth curved loop handle and horizontal reeded banding encircling the cylindrical body. A faint visible seam runs vertically down the side, and a later inscription is present to the underside, alongside slight surface wear from age and use. Measuring 9 cm high, 10 cm wide, and 7 cm deep, this piece makes a display item for a sideboard top in a dining room or living space today, serving as a decorative table accessory.

FAQs

Old Sheffield Plate refers to a historical metalworking process developed in 18th-century England where a thin sheet of silver was fused onto a copper ingot before being rolled into sheets for manufacture.

These items were crafted by hammering fused silver-and-copper sheets over shaping forms, often finished with turned rims, hand-drawn reeded decoration, and internal gilding to protect against copper corrosion.

Authentic pieces usually exhibit copper showing through at points of high wear, distinct seam lines from hand assembly, a lack of standard electroplate hallmarks, and period-typical engraved or reeded decoration.

A small silver tankard works as an accent on a sideboard top, curated shelf, or desk, adding metallic texture alongside glass, ceramics, and books.

Clean gently using a soft microfibre cloth and a mild silver polish designed for historic silver, avoiding abrasive rubbing that can remove the thin silver layer covering the copper base.
