This German solid silver trinket box dates from around 1900 in the Rococo Revival style. The piece has a silver colour and a polished metallic finish, formed in a circular shape with detailed relief embossing depicting putti figures playing beneath floral garlands, alongside architectural temple elements and decorative border mouldings. The photograph shows a round lidded profile with elaborate figural relief scenes across the top, patterned trim around the outer edges, and distinct raised figural carvings. Measuring 5.1 cm across by 1.5 cm tall and weighing 34 grams, the box serves as a functional container for small valuables or snuff. It suits placement on a sideboard top or dressing table in a traditional interior setting.

FAQs

During the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries, silversmiths in centres such as Hanau, Germany, produced highly detailed silverware inspired by earlier Renaissance and Rococo designs. These pieces often featured elaborate repousse scenes, classic motifs, and figures, catering to an international market interested in historical Revivalist craftsmanship.

Antique silver boxes were generally crafted from sterling or continental silver, such as 800 or 925 purity. Decorative elements were typically achieved using repousse and chasing techniques, where the metal was hammered from behind to create raised relief patterns and finished with finer surface details.

Authentic pieces usually display official makers marks or purity hallmarks stamped on the underside, interior, or rim. Examining the wear pattern, weight, joinery, and depth of the hand-chased ornamentation can also help determine authenticity and age.

An antique silver trinket box works well as a decorative accent on a dressing table, sideboard top, or bedside surface. Paired with modern minimalist tray arrangements or natural stone surfaces, the detailed metalwork provides a textured, reflective contrast.

Silver items should be polished gently using a non-abrasive silver cloth or specialist silver polish to prevent damage to delicate relief details. Storing the box in a low-humidity environment away from direct sulfur sources prevents excessive oxidisation.
