Art Deco Lamp

1920 - 1940
For Sale by Poirot Art Deco
Description

An Art Deco lamp, with a walnut pedestal and a square walnut base. The lampshade would have been bought in the 1930s for a child’s bedroom. The decoration is based on the

characters created by Bertram Lamb, who lived in Chesterfield, and illustrated by Austen Bowen-Payne. Pip (a dog), Squeak (a penguin) and Wilfred (a baby rabbit) were the

stars of a cartoon on the children’s pages in the Daily Mirror from 1919 to 1955. Pip, Squeak and Wilfred were hugely popular from the 1920s to 1950s and became household names - so much so that the three main commemorative First World War medals were nicknamed after them.

The lamp without damage, with some fading to the characters as to be expected from this 100 year old glass lampshade.

Strictly Vetted Dealers

Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.

Secure Transit

Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.

The Sustainable Choice

Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

This Art Deco table lamp from 1930 comprises a walnut pedestal and a square parquetry wooden base supporting a frosted glass shade. The white glass shade carries painted pictorial illustrations of animals in orange and grey over green grass, topped with a dark finial. The walnut components exhibit a warm brown tone with distinct wood grain. The decorative motifs draw on the characters Pip, Squeak and Wilfred, created by Bertram Lamb and illustrated by Austen Bowen-Payne for a Daily Mirror cartoon. The glass shows fading to the painted characters, as expected from age, while the structure remains without damage. Measuring 51 cm high, 15.3 cm wide, and 15 cm deep, the lamp sits comfortably on a bedside table in a bedroom today. The scale and character make it a practical reading light or accent piece for domestic interiors.

FAQs

Art Deco lamp design, originating in the 1920s and 1930s, is characterised by geometric shapes, streamlined forms, and decorative motifs that reflect modernism and early industrial craftsmanship.

Art Deco lamps typically feature materials such as frosted or enamelled glass, stepped wooden or metal bases, and geometric parquetry veneer or chrome fittings.

Authentic pieces often showcase period-appropriate craftsmanship, including original glass shades with molded or hand-painted designs, weighted geometric timber or metal bases, and period wiring components.

An Art Deco accent lamp functions well on a contemporary sideboard, bedside table, or bookshelf, providing warm ambient illumination and adding character to the space.

Clean glass shades gently using a soft, dry microfibre cloth, avoiding harsh chemical cleaners that may damage painted details. The wooden base should be preserved using a small amount of neutral beeswax polish.
