FAQs

A Victorian standing book trough is a piece of late 19th-century English library furniture designed to elevate and present books in an open, accessible format, typically set atop a pedestal stem and tripod base.

These pieces were primarily constructed from hardwoods such as solid mahogany or walnut, featuring turned baluster stems, hand-cut dovetail drawer joinery, and brass keyhole escutcheons.

Authentic examples feature natural timber patination, hand-turned pedestal columns, cabriole tripod legs, and period-correct dovetail joints on integrated drawers, sometimes accompanied by maker stamps such as James Shoolbred & Co.

Place the stand beside an armchair in a reading corner or living area to hold selected volumes, art books, or periodicals at hand level.

Dust the surface regularly with a soft dry cloth and nourish the wood once or twice a year with a natural beeswax polish, keeping the timber away from direct sunlight and radiators.
