This Victorian sterling silver christening mug comes from the mid-nineteenth century, hallmarked for Birmingham 1865 with the silversmiths mark for George Unite. The vessel stands on a stepped pedestal base with a flared rim and an ornate scroll handle attached to the side. The polished silver body displays chased floral motifs alongside repousse decoration, diamond-shaped textured panels, and circular indentations encircling the lower half. The interior shows a smooth reflective surface, while the exterior has no inscriptions or monograms. Measuring 8 cm tall and 6 cm across the top, the piece weighs 66.4 grams. A compact and decorative item of silverware, it makes a fitting addition to a sideboard top or display cabinet in a traditional home interior.

Traditionally given as a baptismal or naming gift in the 19th century, silver christening mugs symbolised prosperity and enduring family heritage for a newborn child.

These items were constructed from solid sterling silver, often decorated using techniques such as hand-chasing, repousse embossing, and casting for ornate handles and pedestal bases.

Authentic British sterling silver from the Victorian era features full hallmarks, including the lion passant mark, a town mark, a date letter, a makers mark, and the monarchs profile duty mark.

Small silver vessels function effectively on open shelving, mantelpieces, or tray displays, serving as delicate bud vases, desk organisers, or decorative accents.

Maintain sterling silver by dusting with a soft microfibre cloth and applying specialised, non-abrasive silver polish sparingly to remove tarnish without stripping fine surface detail.
