FAQs

A giltwood standard lamp is a floor-standing light fixture constructed from carved timber coated in gesso and finished with thin layers of gold leaf. Popularised during the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries, these tall lamps were designed to hold candles or early electrical fittings, providing elevated accent lighting in grand interior spaces.

Traditional giltwood standard lamps feature hand-carved softwood or hardwood frames sealed with a plaster-like gesso substrate. Gold leaf foil is applied over a coloured clay base known as bole, with solid brass light fittings and wiring components integrated into the central column.

Authentic period pieces show subtle irregularities in hand-carved elements, visible joinery seams along the column, and natural wear where the underlying red or grey bole clay shows through the gold gilding. Additionally, genuine late nineteenth-century examples often display historic conversion marks from oil or gas to early electricity.

A giltwood standard lamp functions as a tall accent piece when paired with a simple silk or linen shade to balance the detailed carvings. Position the lamp in a living room reading corner, beside a neutral fabric armchair, or within a quiet alcove to create warm, directional lighting.

Dust giltwood surfaces regularly using a clean, soft dry brush or feather duster, avoiding moisture entirely as water dissolves gesso and loosens gold leaf. Ensure electrical wiring is inspected by a qualified electrician to maintain safe usage.
