This George II period Irish stool dates from around 1750 and is made from solid elm with a dark brown timber finish. The rectangular seat pad features a newly upholstered gold silk jacquard fabric patterned with bronze and charcoal winter trees. Hand carved laurel, foliate scrolls, and drop bell husks adorn the hips, leading down to cabriole legs terminating in well carved claw and ball feet. Small scuffs, knocks, and cracks consistent with age and use appear across the robust frame. Practical dimensions measure 48 cm high, 56 cm deep, and 39 cm wide at the hips. The piece functions well as an occasional seat in a living room, a dressing stool, or placed at the foot of a bed.

George II period stools, dating from roughly 1727 to 1760, are recognised for their sturdy proportions, graceful cabriole legs, and detailed hand-carving. Design motifs often incorporate shell, acanthus, or scroll carvings on the knees, ending in ball-and-claw or padded feet.

Irish cabinetmakers during the mid-18th century primarily utilised dense native timbers such as elm, oak, and walnut, alongside imported mahogany. Upholstery traditionally consisted of webbed seat frames stuffed with horsehair and covered in wool damask, silk brocade, or needlework.

Authentic pieces exhibit hand-cut joinery, asymmetrical tool marks beneath the frame, and natural oxidisation on unpolished timber surfaces. The carving should display depth and variation consistent with hand tools rather than modern machine uniformity.

An antique stool works well as an accent piece at the foot of a bed, beneath a console table, or alongside primary seating. Pairing structured antique woodwork with neutral textiles creates an engaging juxtaposition in contemporary spaces.

Keep timber surfaces clean by dusting with a soft cloth and applying beeswax sparingly once or twice a year to maintain the patina. Protect delicate silk or wool upholstery from direct sunlight and vacuum gently using a brush attachment.
