Why Sellingantiques dated this piece to THE 1880s:
Solid oak drawer linings with fine dovetails: late Victorian cabinetmaking.
Saw-tooth wooden ratchets: traditional adjustable shelf supports of the period.
Repousse brass relief panels: typical late 19th-century Flemish Renaissance revival work.
Natural darkening in the carved recesses: many years of handling and waxing.

This is an independent date report produced by Sellingantiques using its own proprietary system. The process uses the photographs shown on this page. The system is never told the date the dealer has declared. This report shows that the two dates corroborate.

This Victorian secretaire bookcase from circa 1880 is constructed from dark brown oak, brass, and glass. The upper section comprises glazed doors with leaded glass panels, enclosing two adjustable shelves, positioned above two small drawers. The lower base features a pull-down secretaire drawer opening to form a writing desk, alongside four small internal stationery drawers, surmounting a two-door cupboard with a single internal shelf. Decorative details include extensive carved pillars, turned spindles, gadrooned feet, and classical-inspired repoussé brass panels depicting cavorting putti, birds, grotesques, and scrolling acanthus on the drawer and door fronts. Cracks are present in a couple of pieces of glass in the upper doors. The piece measures 204.5 cm high, 90 cm wide, and 53.5 cm deep. Appropriate for a gentleman's library, study, or living room, this compact storage unit combines display shelving with a functional writing surface. The dark timber finish and elaborate metalwork provide a traditional aesthetic suitable for housing books, stationery, and display items while offering concealed workspace.

Popular throughout the 19th century, secretaire bookcases combined storage for literature with a pull-out or fall-front desk section, often crafted from solid hardwoods like oak and mahogany with historicist revival details.

Pieces from this period frequently feature solid oak or walnut framing, hand-cut dovetail joinery, leaded glass panelling, and cast or embossed brass metalwork ornamentation.

Authentic period examples display signs of hand-tooling, original lock mechanisms, natural age-related oxidisation on metal fittings, and uneven thickness in leaded glass panels.

Position the cabinet as a statement piece in a contemporary study, living room, or hallway, balancing dark timber tones with light wall finishes and modern desk accessories.

Dust regularly with a dry microfiber cloth, apply beeswax periodically to nourish the oak finish, and avoid abrasive polishes on aged brass to protect its natural patina.
