This nineteenth-century Chinese table lamp takes the form of a hand-carved Qing Dynasty hardwood figure standing on a gnarled root base. The dark brown polished timber depicts a bearded fisherman wearing draped robes, carrying a fish in his hand and another vertically against his back, surmounted by a brass lamp fitting. The carving displays intricate facial expressions, flowing garments, and detailed textured surfaces throughout the figurative body and organic base. Measuring 48 cm high, 15 cm wide, and 15 cm deep, the piece sits upon flat surfaces such as a sideboard top or desk within a gentleman's library or study. It brings traditional craftsmanship and narrative depth into domestic interiors as a functional accent light.

FAQs

During the Qing dynasty, Chinese craftsmen sculpted dense hardwoods and tree roots into detailed figures from folklore, Taoism, and daily life, which were later adapted or created as decorative lamp bases.

These bases were typically hand-carved from native Asian hardwoods or root timber featuring natural oil finishes or lacquer, combined with brass or metal electrical components.

Authentic period carvings exhibit hand-chiseled tool marks, natural grain variations, deep patination in recessed areas, and surface wear consistent with age rather than uniform machine moulding.

Position the lamp on a sideboard, desk, or console table paired with neutral ceramics or modern artwork to allow the sculpted timber forms to create visual contrast.

Dust the carving regularly using a dry, soft-bristled brush or cloth, and occasionally apply a light coat of clear beeswax polish to protect the timber grain from drying.
