Tea caddy spoons emerged in the 18th century as luxury items designed to measure loose tea leaves from a caddy into a teapot, reflecting the growing status of tea drinking in British society.

These pieces were typically crafted from sterling silver using hand-beating, casting, and repousse techniques, often featuring detailed engraved or chased decoration on the bowl and handle.

Authenticity is determined by examining hallmarks, including the makers mark, standard mark (such as the lion passant for sterling silver), assay office mark, and date letter, alongside the characteristic weight and wear patterns of handmade items.

Antique silver items can be displayed within glass cabinets, styled on a sideboard as part of a curated collection, or used functionally to add historical character and tactile contrast to contemporary settings.

Preserve antique silver by storing it in a dry, tarnish-resistant environment, handling it with clean hands or cotton gloves, and cleaning it sparingly using specialised silver polish only when necessary to protect the patina.
