Hall lanterns were originally developed in large country houses and townhouses during the 18th and 19th centuries to illuminate entrance halls and corridors before the widespread availability of gas and electric lighting.

Traditional lanterns are typically constructed from a metal framesuch as brass, bronze, or gilt ironfitted with glazed glass panels and internal candle-holders or electrification.

Authentic period pieces often exhibit hand- soldered joints, heavy-gauge metals, hand-blown or leaded glass panels, and traditional fixings rather than modern machine-pressed components.

Hang the fixture centrally in an entryway, foyer, or high-ceilinged corridor to create a striking focal point that contrasts warm metallic finishes against contemporary neutral walls.

Dust the metal gently with a soft microfibre cloth and avoid harsh chemical abrasives or polishes, which can strip away the delicate gilded finish.
