Antique Silver Viking Longship Dish

19th century
Description

This is a lovely novelty dish dating towards the end of the reign of Queen Victoria.

Crafted in solid sterling silver, it is clearly hallmarked for London 1896. Whilst the maker's mark worn, it is probably by Holland, Aldwinckle & Slater. There are a couple of bruises to the silver but no tears, and it is priced accordingly. The final picture shows it with another longship dish that I currently have in stock but which is not included in this sale.

This Victorian decorative dish dates towards the end of the reign of Queen Victoria and follows a Scandinavian Revival style. Made from solid sterling silver in a polished silver colour, it takes the form of a Viking longship complete with an elongated hull, a curved prow, a polished interior, and a stylised stern. London hallmarks for 1896 appear on the piece, alongside a worn maker's mark and a couple of bruises to the silver. The dimensions measure 9.6 cm high, 12 cm wide, and 4.5 cm deep. Place the dish on a sideboard top within a gentleman's library or study as a decorative vessel. The novelty design offers a distinctive accent for holding small items or simply standing alone as a display piece. The silver finish reflects light against the metallic surface, highlighting the ship-shaped form and curved structural details.

Silver boat-shaped dishes, often depicting Viking longships or gondolas, gained popularity during the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries. Influenced by romantic historical revivals and Scandinavian design movements, these novelties served both decorative and functional purposes on dining tables.

These items were predominantly crafted from sterling silver or high-grade silver plate using techniques such as casting, repousse, and hand-chasing. Craftsmen meticulously detailed the hull, prow, and stern to mimic real nautical vessels.

Authenticity is verified by examining hallmarking stamped on the hull or underside, indicating the maker, purity, and location of manufacture. Additionally, signs of age such as natural oxidisation in carved details and honest wear patterns help distinguish original pieces from modern reproductions.

A silver longship dish functions well as a trinket tray on a hallway console, a desk accessory for stationery, or a decorative centrepiece on a sideboard. Its metallic lustre provides a polished contrast against natural timber surfaces.

Maintain silver by dusting with a soft microfibre cloth and periodically polishing with a non-abrasive silver cream. Avoid harsh chemicals and store in a dry environment to minimise tarnishing and surface oxidisation.
