Antique Silver Georgian Pap Boat

18th century
Description

This is a fine example of a solid sterling silver pap boat, dating from the reign of George III.

It is clearly hallmarked for London 1813. The maker's mark its slightly smudged and thus indecipherable. The gadrooned border is raised at the back and it is in a good overall condition with a few small knocks, but nothing more than would be expected of an item of this age.

These 'boats' were used to feed the elderly, infirm and young with 'pap', a type of gruel.

Width: 8cm

Height: 2.5cm.

Weight: 65g.

Complimentary gift wrapping available on request.

This Georgian antique solid sterling silver pap boat originates from the reign of George III and carries clear London hallmarks for 1813 alongside a slightly smudged, indecipherable maker's mark. The piece presents a bright, reflective silver colour across its polished surface. A shallow oval body is complemented by an elongated spout, a beaded rim pattern, and a raised border at the back, displaying a few small knocks consistent with age. Measuring 2.5 cm high, 13 cm wide, and 8 cm deep, the item weighs 65 g. Historically used to feed gruel to the young, infirm, and elderly, the pap boat serves today as a decorative accessory suitable for placement on a sideboard top in an English Country House interior. The silver finish reflects light across the curved bowl, while the detailed beaded rim runs continuously along the upper edge of the vessel leading to the smooth pouring lip.

A pap boat is a specialised shallow vessel with an elongated spout used during the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries to feed soft food or milk mixture, known as pap, to infants or invalids.

Georgian pap boats were commonly hand-hammered from sterling silver or cast in pewter, frequently decorated with reeded, beaded, or gadrooned border rims.

Authentic examples typically feature full British hallmarks stamped on the underside or near the rim, including makers marks, date letters, assay office marks, and the lion passant.

Small antique silver vessels work effectively as accent pieces on a sideboard, trinket dishes on a dressing table, or organised items within a curated glass display cabinet.

Clean gently using warm water with a mild detergent, followed by light polishing with a soft cotton cloth and specialized non-abrasive silver foam to limit tarnish buildup.
