This small William III sterling silver porringer dates from the late 17th century. It takes the form of a rounded bowl with two curved S-scroll wire handles attached to the sides, featuring spiral fluting on the interior base and embossed lobes along the lower exterior wall. The piece has a polished metallic silver finish with subtle tonal variations visible on the hammered surfaces. Measuring 8 cm in diameter across the handles, the vessel sits securely on a flat base. In a modern home, this porringer fits naturally on a sideboard top or as part of a traditional display collection in an English country house setting.

A porringer is a small, shallow two-handled bowl or cup originally used in the 17th and 18th centuries for serving warm porridge, broth, or medicinal caudle.

During the late 17th century, porringers were hand-hammered from solid sterling silver or Britannia standard silver, often featuring chased fluting, lobed embossing, and cast wire scroll handles.

Authentic pieces display period English hallmarks including the makers mark, date letter, and purity mark, along with evidence of hand-hammering and natural surface wear consistent with age.

A small silver vessel can be displayed on a sideboard, mantelpiece, or bookshelf alongside ceramics and glassware, or re-purposed as a decorative trinket dish.

Clean gently using a soft cloth and non-abrasive silver polish formulated for antiques, avoiding aggressive buffing that can strip hand-chased surface details or natural tarnish in recessed areas.
