This Persian Heriz carpet from 1920 is a large floor covering handwoven from wool and cotton. It displays a bold geometric central medallion, angular ivory spandrels, and a turtle border pattern filled with geometric floral motifs. The colour palette includes rust red, deep navy blue, ivory, and vibrant secondary tones. The piece shows light, age-related wear with slightly heavier areas, along with secure fringes and selvedges. Measuring 336 cm high by 237 cm wide with a 1 cm depth, the carpet covers a substantial floor space. Heriz carpets suit traditional living rooms, studies, or dining rooms within an English Country House setting, anchoring furniture arrangements while adding warmth and pattern to timber floors. The geometric design works well beneath a large dining table or in the centre of a reception room, bringing texture and heritage character to interior schemes. Its durable wool and cotton construction ensures it handles everyday use in high-traffic zones of the home while retaining its decorative impact.

FAQs

Heriz carpets originate from the Heris region in Northwest Iran, famed for producing hard-wearing textiles with distinctive angular interpretations of classical Persian floral patterns.

These carpets are hand-knotted using local wool pile anchored to a durable cotton warp and weft foundation, incorporating natural plant-based dyes such as madder and indigo.

Authentic pieces exhibit a large central geometric medallion, oversized corner spandrels, a coarse knot count, and semi-rigid construction resulting from thick wool and double-weft weaving.

The bold geometric patterns and deep colour palette allow a Heriz rug to ground minimalist modern spaces, anchor formal dining rooms, or complement traditional wooden furniture.

Vacuum regularly without using a rotating brush bar, rotate the carpet annually to balance foot traffic and light exposure, and rely on professional hand-cleaning specialists for stain removal.
