Strictly Vetted Dealers

Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.

Secure Transit

Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.

The Sustainable Choice

Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

This set of four Victorian style chamber candlesticks dates to the late 19th Century. Made of silver plate, the pieces display a bright silver colour with polished metal surfaces. Each candlestick features a round base with scalloped edges and shell detailing, accompanied by a scroll handle, a removable central sconce, and a detachable conical snuffer. The photograph shows tall pointed finials on the snuffers and slight darker surface tarnishing in the recessed areas of the metal. The total weight is approximately 1.2 kg. These pieces work well placed on a sideboard top or mantlepiece in a traditional living space or dining room. The set provides functional lighting alongside decorative historical appeal for an English Country House interior. Each candlestick measures 9 cm high, 17.5 cm wide, and 15 cm deep, while the snuffers stand 8.5 cm high. The undersides show slight signs of wear consistent with age, but the items remain in good overall condition ready for display or use.

FAQs

Chamber candlesticks, or chambersticks, emerged prominently in the 18th and 19th centuries as portable lighting. Designed with a wide tray to catch dripped wax and a ring or scroll handle, they were carried to light the way to bedrooms at night.

These items are generally made from a base metal, such as nickel silver or copper, coated with a layer of fine silver via electroplating. They often feature cast or stamped decorative elements such as gadrooning, shell motifs, and fitted conical snuffers.

Look for makers marks or standard electroplate stamps such as EPNS (Electroplated Nickel Silver) on the base or rim. Authentic pieces often show minor wear where the base metal shows through, alongside period-appropriate construction on the snuffer retainers.

Group a set along a dining table, sideboard, or mantelpiece to introduce metallic warmth and historic texture. They function well combined with modern tableware or styled alongside stacked art books in traditional and eclectic settings.

Clean gently using a soft, non-abrasive cotton cloth and specialized silver polish. Avoid harsh chemical cleaners or dipping solutions that can strip thin electroplating, and remove melted wax by soaking the area in warm water rather than scraping.
