It is of superb quality, very solid and sturdily built. There is plenty of storage space for books and objects, the shelves are adjustable and removable. The mahogany has a beautiful colour tone and has acquired a gorgeous patina over the years.

Victorian bookcases are characterised by robust construction, rich timber tones, and classical architectural influences such as cornices and pilasters, reflecting the craftsmanship of the 19th century.

These pieces were typically constructed from solid hardwoods like mahogany or oak, featuring hand-cut dovetail joints, solid timber backs, and adjustable shelving supported by wooden pegs or brass ratchets.

Authenticity is indicated by period-appropriate joinery methods, natural ageing and patina on the timber, handmade screws or fixings, and timber shrinkage consistent with 19th-century manufacturing.

Pair the dark wood tones with neutral walls and contemporary art to create a balanced contrast, or use it within a study alongside minimalist seating to anchor the rooms design.

Keep the timber away from direct sunlight and heat sources to prevent cracking. Maintain the finish by occasionally applying a traditional beeswax and buffing with a soft cloth.
