Antique Tall Narrow Mahogany Open Bookcase | Library Shelving

1900 - 1920
For Sale by ActFurniture LTD
Description

Antique open bookcase in mahogany, a tall and elegant piece of good, honest quality, showcasing traditional craftsmanship and a lovely period character.

The bookcase offers five shelves above a fixed base shelf, giving six generous open spaces for books, files or the display of decorative pieces. Its slim, shallow proportions make it ideal for an alcove, landing, hallway or any space where floor room is at a premium.

It is crowned by a moulded cornice and framed by reeded uprights, standing on a plain plinth base. The back is made up of traditional tongue-and-groove pine boards secured with cross battens, a sign of good solid construction.

Presented in good condition with honest signs of age and use. A very desirable and practical piece, perfect for adding storage and character to a study, sitting room or library.

This 1920 Victorian open bookcase is made from mahogany with a dark brown finish and stands 210 cm high, 79.5 cm wide, and 22 cm deep. The piece takes the form of a tall, narrow library shelving unit in a gentleman's library style, featuring six open shelving compartments arranged above a plain plinth base. A pronounced moulded cornice crowns the top, while vertical reeded mouldings frame the sides. The visible timber grain has a warm dark brown tone, and the back is constructed from traditional tongue-and-groove pine boards secured with cross battens. In a contemporary interior, the bookcase is well suited to a study, sitting room, or library, particularly where floor space is limited such as within an alcove, on a landing, or along a hallway. It accommodates books, files, and decorative objects on its fixed base shelf and five adjustable or fixed tiers. The surface displays honest signs of age and use consistent with its period origin, adding authentic character to the traditional design without decorative hardware or upholstery.

FAQs

An open mahogany bookcase is a freestanding shelving unit constructed without glass doors or solid front panels, designed for immediate access to books. Popularised during the 18th and 19th centuries, these pieces were standard elements of private libraries, studies, and drawing rooms.

Antique bookcases are predominantly crafted from solid mahogany or mahogany veneers laid over pine or oak secondary timber. Traditional joinery techniques include hand-cut dovetail joints, tongue-and-groove backboards, moulded cornices, and sturdy plinth bases.

Authentic antique mahogany pieces show characteristic signs of age, including original tool marks on hidden surfaces, natural patination, timber shrinkage on the back panels, and hand-cut joinery. The surface finish often exhibits depth built up from historical wax polish rather than modern synthetic lacquers.

A tall mahogany bookcase can be positioned against neutral painted walls to highlight its rich wood tones. Arrange shelving using a combination of vertical and horizontal book stacks alongside structural ceramics or small artwork to balance visual mass.

Keep mahogany furniture away from direct heat sources and direct sunlight to prevent timber movement, drying, or fading. Dust regularly with a clean lint-free cloth and apply a quality beeswax polish once or twice per year to preserve the timber and patina.
