This vintage 1920 open bookcase is made in the Georgian style from dark brown mahogany with a warm, rich colour and striped grain. It measures 181 cm high, 75.5 cm wide, and 30 cm deep. The tall timber structure incorporates six open sections with five shelves, framed by a dentil moulded cornice and fluted side pilasters. The base features a shaped apron and bracket feet. Suitable for use in a study, library, or home office, the piece provides generous storage for books, files, and display items. The traditional architectural details and dark timber finish make it a practical storage solution for contemporary interiors requiring classic period character.

FAQs

Georgian style bookcases typically feature classical architectural elements such as dentil cornices, fluted pilasters, symmetrical proportions, and rich dark timbers like mahogany.

Solid mahogany, mahogany veneers, oak secondary timbers for interior drawer and frame linings, and brass shelf fittings are standard materials used in these pieces.

Authentic period pieces exhibit hand-planed timbers, hand-cut dovetail joinery, evidence of natural timber shrinkage around frame joints, and age-related patination on untamed surfaces.

Balance dark mahogany timber against light neutral walls, interspersing structured book arrangements with minimalist ceramic vessels, framed artwork, and contemporary decorative objects.

Dust surfaces regularly with a soft, dry lint-free cloth and apply a beeswax polish annually, taking care to avoid placing the item in direct sunlight or adjacent to heat sources.
