Imari porcelain is a traditional type of Japanese export porcelain produced in the town of Arita, taking its name from the port of Imari. Originating in the Edo period, it typically features a distinctive palette of underglaze blue and iron red, often accented with gold.

Traditional Imari pieces are crafted from fine-grained white porcelain clay, fired at high temperatures. They are hand-painted using mineral pigments, predominantly cobalt blue for underglaze details and iron red, alongside enamels and sometimes gilt for surface ornamentation.

Authentic 19th-century Imari pieces often exhibit characteristic craquelure, subtle iron-spotting in the glaze, and hand-painted brushwork with slight irregularities. The colour palette generally relies on deep cobalt blues and rich terracotta reds applied over a slightly greyish-white porcelain body.

Antique Imari lamps serve as striking focal points in modern interiors by introducing rich colour, pattern, and historical texture. They pair well with neutral colour schemes, minimalist furniture, and classic pleated silk or linen lampshades to balance traditional and contemporary elements.

Antique ceramic lamps should be dusted gently with a soft, dry microfibre cloth. Avoid harsh chemical cleaners, abrasive sponges, or submerging the ceramic base in water, particularly around vintage electrical fittings or delicate hand-painted enamel decorations.
