Mark Seabrook Antiques has dated this Antique Iron Rushlight Holder to the 18th Century.
...the pine cleft was gripped in the sprung jaws and would burn more brightly and quickly than a candle and also give off an aromatic pleasant smell as opposed to the rushlight dipped in tallow. The peerman was mostly found in Scandinavia, Northern Germany, Austria , Switzerland and in the British Isles almost entirely in Scotland...this fine example is in very nice condition with a good colour.
