Engine-turned enamel, also known as guilloche, involves engraving a precise geometric pattern into a metal substrate using a mechanical lathe before applying translucent enamel. This technique gained widespread popularity during the Victorian, Edwardian, and Art Deco periods for small decorative and vanity items.

These pieces are typically constructed from sterling silver or continental silver alloys, featuring vitreous glass enamel applied to the metal surface. Interior gilding, known as vermeil, was also frequently applied to prevent tarnishing from the contents.

Authenticity is usually verified through hallmarks stamped on the silver rim or base, indicating the metal purity, makers mark, and assay office. Additionally, genuine antique enamel exhibits fine hand-worked guilloche lines beneath the glass and natural signs of age-related wear.

These items can be displayed on a dressing table tray, styled atop a stack of art books on a coffee table, or placed inside a glass cabinet to highlight their intricate colour and craftsmanship.

Enamelled silver should be cleaned very carefully using a soft, dry microfibre cloth to remove dust. Abrasive silver dips, harsh chemicals, and ultrasonic cleaners must be avoided, as they can damage or discolour the delicate vitreous enamel surface.
