FAQs

Berry spoons and matching sifters became highly fashionable during the Victorian era, specifically for serving fresh soft fruits like strawberries alongside cream and powdered sugar at formal dining tables.

These items are traditionally fashioned from sterling silver, frequently featuring a layer of gold wash known as silver-gilt or vermeil on the bowl, and decorated using hand-chased or repousse techniques.

Authentic pieces typically bear British hallmark stamps indicating the assay office, standard mark for sterling silver, and a date letter corresponding to the year of manufacture, alongside makers marks.

While traditionally used for dining, cased flatware sets can be displayed within glass-fronted cabinets or utilised during special occasions to add a touch of historic craftsmanship to contemporary table settings.

Antique silver should be washed gently in warm water with a mild, phosphate-free soap, dried thoroughly with a soft cloth, and polished sparingly using a specialized silver cloth to avoid removing the delicate gilt finish.
