FAQs

A go to bed is a small, portable combination candle holder and match container traditionally used in the 18th and 19th centuries to light a persons way to their bedroom before electric lighting was common.

These items were predominantly turned from dense native and exotic hardwoods such as boxwood, lignum vitae, walnut, and fruitwood, often featuring bone or ivory detailing.

Authenticity is determined by hand-turned tool marks, authentic wear patterns, rich patination accumulated over centuries, and construction methods consistent with pre-industrial lathe work.

It can be displayed as a sculptural object on a mantelpiece, bookshelf, or side table, adding historical texture and a sense of curiosity to traditional or eclectic interiors.

Treen should be kept away from direct sunlight and extreme temperature fluctuations to prevent wood splitting, and treated occasionally with microcrystalline wax to nourish the finish.
