Description

We are delighted to offer this wonderful cased pair of solid silver spoons with marks for Smith, Nicholson & Co, London 1858.

Distinct and unique upon first glance, the pair feature a very ornate and decorative design with a Rococo-style shell bowl and terminals with a coat of arms. The spoons were made to commemorate/celebrate the Salters Company, one of the twelve great livery companies of London, ranked 9th in order of precedence.

The pair are of excellent quality and gauge, made from a cast design, they are very heavy and have a quality feel in hand. The stem features a banner wrapped design with the motto "Sal Sapit Omnia" (salt savours all).

The bowls are gilt (gold on top of solid silver) which not only presents a wonderful aesthetic contrast but also prevents the silver from tarnishing from the salt.

A wonderful pair, whether it be for a collection, display or to use with a pair of fine salt cellars, a very apt, symbolic and ornate pair.

A full set of hallmarks are present on the bowls of both spoons.

Victorian silverware frequently features elaborate ornamentation, revival motifs such as rococo or gothic revivals, and heavy gauges of metal reflecting the industrial prosperity and craftsmanship of the mid-nineteenth century.

Items from this period were typically crafted from sterling silver, forged or cast, and hand-finished with chasing, engraving, or parcel-gilding, followed by official assay office hallmarking.

Authenticity is verified through clear hallmarks stamped into the metal, which include a makers mark, a standard mark for sterling silver, a date letter corresponding to the assay year, and a town mark.

Antique silver can be displayed in glass-fronted cabinets, used as part of curated tabletop arrangements, or incorporated into contemporary table settings to provide a contrasting historic texture.

Preservation requires storing items in tarnish-resistant cloths, cleaning infrequently with non-abrasive silver polishes specifically formulated for antiques, and avoiding harsh chemical dips that can damage patination.
