Letter openers and paper knives became essential desk accessories during the 19th century as postal correspondence increased, often crafted from luxury materials like silver, ivory, and hardstones to display status on a writing desk.

Traditional construction typically involved a metal handle made of sterling silver, brass, or gilt bronze, joined to a flat blade fashioned from materials such as steel, bone, ivory, horn, or decorative hardstones like nephrite jade.

Authenticity is generally determined by examining hallmarks on the silver components, which indicate the assay office, metal purity, and date letter, alongside natural ageing characteristics such as surface patination and hand-engraved detailing.

An antique letter opener can be styled on an office desk, coffee table, or bookshelf, resting flat as a decorative object or positioned atop a stack of vintage books to add tactile interest and historic character.

Silver components should be maintained using a specialist microfibre cloth to gently remove tarnish without touching the blade material, while jade can be wiped clean with a soft, damp cloth and dried immediately to protect the polished surface.
