Why Sellingantiques dated this piece to THE 19TH CENTURY:
Copper showing through along the flutes: fused plate worn by cleaning.
Telescopic friction stems: typical Regency mechanism for raising candlelight above dining tables.
Die-stamped acanthus and leaf borders: decorative work of the George IV period.
Aged green baize bases: original style of table protection for weighted candlesticks.

This is an independent date report produced by Sellingantiques using its own proprietary system. The process uses the photographs shown on this page. The system is never told the date the dealer has declared. This report shows that the two dates corroborate.

This grand Regency set of four Old Sheffield plated extending candlesticks dates to the nineteenth century, specifically between 1810 and 1830. The silver coloured pieces display heavy weight construction with tight and functional extending mechanisms, showing good overall condition with no dents or splits, slight copper bleed to some raised edges on the stems, and an old solder repair to the top of one candlestick. Each candlestick stands 25 cm high, 12.5 cm wide, and 12.5 cm deep, rising from stepped circular bases adorned with acanthus leaf borders up through telescopic fluted columns. They serve as a dining table center decoration in a home today.

Old Sheffield Plate refers to silver fused onto a copper core, a technique developed in the 18th century prior to electroplating. Extending or telescopic candlesticks incorporate an adjustable mechanism within the column that allows the height of the sconce to be altered for dining tables or desks.

Regency period candlesticks were typically crafted from solid sterling silver, Old Sheffield plate, or cast brass. Old Sheffield plate items used sheets of silver-copper alloy fused under heat, often weighted inside the base with pitch or lead for physical stability.

Authentic Old Sheffield Plate often exhibits copper exposure where the silver layer has worn thin over time, particularly along raised decorative edges. Items from circa 1820 typically incorporate turned edges or applied silver wire borders designed to conceal the underlying copper core.

A set of candlesticks can be arranged along the centre of a formal dining table, positioned symmetrically on a sideboard, or placed on a fireplace mantelpiece to provide structured height and reflective metallic accents.

Clean Old Sheffield Plate using a soft cotton cloth and specialized non-abrasive silver polish, avoiding harsh chemical dips or stiff brushes that strip the thin fused silver layer. Remove residual wax with warm water rather than metal implements to prevent scratching.
