Description

A beautiful and very well made antique Art Nouveau mahogany duet piano stool / bench. This was made in England, it dates from around the 1880-1900 period.

The quality is superb, this is a useful and versatile piece. It has beautiful satin wood inlay on the front edge and on the back rest. The back and arm rests are beautifully shaped in the typical Art Nouveau fashion.

Intended for use as a duet piano stool, it would very well as an ottoman bench at the end of a bed or as a window seat. The upholstered seat lifts up to reveal some internal storage space, this is nicely finished on all sides, so can be used as a free standing item.

We have had the wood re-polished to a very high standard, the seat has been re-upholstered in a cream cotton fabric. The condition is excellent throughout.

Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

Art Nouveau emerged in the late 19th century, characterised by organic, flowing lines, asymmetrical plant motifs, and a rejection of historic revival styles in favour of modern craftsmanship.

These pieces were typically constructed from dense hardwoods like mahogany or walnut, often featuring hand-carved details, marquetry or string inlay, and traditional joinery such as mortise and tenon.

Authenticity is identified through period-appropriate timber patination, hand-cut dovetails or traditional joinery marks, genuine wear consistent with age, and structural hardware specific to the late 19th or early 20th century.

An antique piano stool functions effectively as an occasional seat in a living room, a hallway bench, or a dressing table seat, adding historical contrast and rich wood tones to modern spaces.

Preservation requires keeping the timber away from direct sunlight and heat sources to prevent cracking, dusting regularly with a soft dry cloth, and occasionally applying microcrystalline wax to protect the polish.
