Japanese Imari is a style of porcelain traditionally manufactured in the town of Arita, in the Hizen province of northwestern Kyushu, and exported from the port of Imari. It is characterised by its distinctive palette of underglaze cobalt blue and overglaze iron red, complemented by gold, green, and black.

Imari pieces are crafted from high-fired hard-paste porcelain clay. Artisans first paint the base design in cobalt blue under the glaze, fire the piece, and then apply overglaze enamels such as iron red, turquoise, and metallic gold before a subsequent lower-temperature firing.

Authentic antique Imari exhibits characteristic hand-painted brushwork with slight irregularities, dense panelled brocade motifs, unglazed foot rims showing iron-spotted clay body ageing, and wear consistent with age on the overglaze enamels and gilding.

An Imari charger adds vibrant colour and historical depth when displayed on a plate stand on a sideboard, mounted securely on a wall as a focal point, or used as a contrasting centrepiece on a dining table.

Antique porcelain should be gently cleaned with a soft, dry cloth or hand-washed occasionally in lukewarm water using mild, non-abrasive soap. Avoid soaking, harsh chemical cleaners, and abrasive sponges to protect the delicate overglaze enamels and gilding.
