FAQs

Imari porcelain refers to Japanese export ceramics produced in the Arita region of Hizen province and shipped via the port of Imari. Popularised from the late 17th century onwards, this style became famous across Europe for its distinctive palette combining underglaze cobalt blue with overglaze iron-red enamels.

Imari porcelain is constructed using high-fired white porcelain clay. The design process involves painting cobalt blue decoration onto the unfired or biscuit body before glazing and firing at high temperatures, followed by low-fire application of iron-red enamels and gilding.

Authentic pieces exhibit hand-painted details with slight variations in brushwork, rich cobalt underglazes, and thick overglaze enamels that sit slightly raised on the surface. Older examples frequently show spur marks on the underside from kiln firing supports.

An Imari plate can be positioned upright on a stand atop a sideboard, mantelpiece, or console table to create a focal point. Alternatively, mounting decorative plates in a symmetrical wall arrangement brings pattern and historical colour into modern interiors.

Clean gently by wiping with lukewarm water and a mild washing-up liquid using a soft microfibre cloth. Avoid soaking, harsh chemical solvents, or abrasive pads, as these will erode sensitive overglaze enamels and gilding over time.
