Silver overlay, also known as silver deposit, is a manufacturing technique where sterling silver is chemically and electrically bonded to glass or porcelain. This decorative style reached the height of its popularity during the Art Nouveau and Edwardian periods in the late 19th and early 20th centuries.

These pieces typically consist of blown or moulded clear glass featuring designs painted with a liquid silver solution. The object was then electroplated to build up the sterling silver layer into intricate floral, geometric, or scroll motifs.

Authentic pieces often exhibit hallmarks or the word sterling stamped onto the silver metal. Additionally, the microscopic interface between the glass and metal typically shows signs of age-related oxidisation and secure adherence characteristic of early 20th-century craftsmanship.

This piece can be displayed on a sideboard, bar cart, or open shelving to introduce metallic reflection and historical texture. Pairing it with minimalist modern accessories allows the intricate metalwork to serve as a focal point.

The item should be hand washed gently using mild detergent and warm water, avoiding abrasive cloths that could scratch the glass or lift the silver deposit. Silver polish should be used sparingly and kept away from the glass interface to prevent discolouration.
