Strictly Vetted Dealers

Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.

Secure Transit

Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.

The Sustainable Choice

Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

A pair of Georgian Regency period old Sheffield plate telescopic candlesticks made from silver plate and copper in a silver colour. Each piece exhibits a circular stepped base with gadrooned borders, a telescopic extending column, and a removable wax drip pan at the top. The silver surface shows copper bleed where the underlying metal reveals itself through age and wear, along with fine turning lines and decorative reeded moulding details. These candlesticks stand with a lowered height of 21 cm and extend up to 26.5 cm, with a base diameter of 12 cm. They function well on a mantelpiece or dining table in a home today to provide ambient lighting during dinner parties or quiet evenings.

FAQs

Old Sheffield Plate refers to an eighteenth and early nineteenth-century process of fusing silver onto copper before shaping into metalware. Telescopic candlesticks feature an internal extending mechanism within the central column to allow height adjustment for ambient or direct lighting.

Sheets of sterling silver were fused to a copper ingot through heat and pressure before being rolled flat. Craftsmen stamped or hand-formed these fused sheets into decorative sections, joining them with lead or silver solder to create hollow structures like candlestick columns.

Authentic pieces frequently demonstrate copper bleeding where the thin outer silver layer has worn away through historical cleaning. They also show die-stamped borders, distinct solder seams, and a slightly warmer tone than electroplated silver.

Positioning silver candlesticks on a dining table or sideboard alongside modern glass or ceramic vessels creates a balanced mix of textures. Arranging them symmetrically on a fireplace mantelpiece offers a classic focal point in living spaces.

Clean gently using specialized non-abrasive silver foam or polish applied with soft cotton cloths to prevent further wearing of the silver layer. Avoid dipping solutions or harsh chemical cleaners that can strip the remaining surface plating.
