A silver-plated punch bowl dating from the 1960 period in the Victorian style exhibits a bright silver colour with a highly reflective finish. The piece stands on a circular pedestal base with vertical fluting, leading up to a large rounded bowl decorated with repoussé floral chasing depicting pressed grape and foliage motifs, twin lion mask drop-ring handles on the sides, and a scalloped rim with wavy gadrooned edges. Practical dimensions are 20 cm high, 33 cm wide, and 33 cm deep. In a modern interior, this item serves as a grand centrepiece on a dining table or sideboard during formal dinner parties and family gatherings.

FAQs

Punch bowls became prominent during the seventeenth century following the introduction of punch recipes from India to Europe. Originally crafted in solid silver or ceramics, silver-plated variations gained popularity during the Victorian era as electroplating techniques allowed for elaborate repousse designs and substantial sizes for communal dining.

These vessels are manufactured by electroplating a fine layer of pure silver onto a base metal, commonly nickel silver or copper. Decorative elements, such as lion mask handles, fluted pedestals, and chased floral borders, are often formed through casting or repousse metalworking techniques before plating.

Authentic pieces feature manufacturer hallmarks, makers stamps, or electroplate alphanumeric codes usually located on the underside of the pedestal base. Visual indications of age include hand-chased ornamentation, cast detail joinery, and natural tarnish or slight wear where the base metal shows through.

In contemporary settings, a silver punch bowl functions as a central decorative object on a dining table, sideboard, or kitchen island. Beyond serving beverages, it can hold floral displays, ice for chilling wine bottles, or function as a reflective vessel on a console table.

Maintain the surface by wiping with a soft microfiber cloth and cleaning periodically with a specialist non-abrasive silver polish to remove tarnish. Avoid dishwasher use, harsh chemical cleaners, and prolonged contact with acidic liquids that can degrade the silver plating.
