FAQs

Toast racks became popular during the Victorian era as formal breakfast traditions evolved in middle and upper-class households, keeping toast crisp by allowing air circulation.

Traditional toast racks were crafted from various metals, most commonly silver plate over copper, sterling silver, or Britannia metal, often featuring ball feet and central carrying rings.

Authentic pieces typically exhibit period-appropriate manufacturing techniques such as EPNS (Electro Plated Nickel Silver) markings, hand-soldered joints, and natural age-related wear or minor silver loss.

An antique toast rack can be utilised functionally on a breakfast table or creatively displayed on an open kitchen shelf or sideboard as a sculptural metal object.

Silver plate should be cleaned gently using a non-abrasive silver cloth or specialist cream, avoiding harsh chemical dips that can strip the plating, and stored in a dry environment.
