FAQs

A Georgian bureau is a writing cabinet featuring a sloping fall-front flap that opens to reveal a fitted interior with pigeonholes and small drawers, typically sitting above several larger drawers for storage.

These pieces were predominantly constructed from solid mahogany or oak, often featuring secondary woods like pine or oak for drawer linings, and complemented by cast brass handles and escutcheons.

Authentic pieces exhibit period construction techniques such as hand-cut dovetails on the drawers, timber shrinkage patterns, traditional wax finishes, and period-appropriate brass hardware.

It functions effectively as a characterful writing station in a home study or living room, contrasting cleanly against neutral modern walls while providing functional concealed storage.

Preservation involves keeping the timber away from direct sunlight and heat sources, dusting regularly with a dry cloth, and occasionally applying a pure beeswax polish to nourish the wood.
