Nineteenth-century sewing tools housed in mother-of-pearl cases were popular decorative objects created for affluent Victorians, often showcasing fine craftsmanship in pocket-sized formats.

These cases were typically constructed using iridescent nacre, commonly known as mother of pearl, combined with brass or gilt metal mounts and lined with velvet or silk.

Authentic pieces usually feature hand-carved shell sections, traditional hinge mechanisms, and occasionally English silver hallmarks or maker marks on the thimble itself.

These objects make ideal focal points when displayed inside glass cabinets, on small occasional tables, or arranged on open shelving within a study or dressing room.

Clean mother of pearl gently with a damp, soft cloth and mild soap, avoiding harsh chemicals, while silver should be polished sparingly with a non-abrasive cloth to preserve the patina.
